Boxing Champion Arrested After Assaulting Wife at Celebrity Basketball Game

Gervonta Davis is in police custody after roughing up his ex-girlfriend at a celebrity basketball game in Florida on Saturday (February 1).

According to TMZ, the boxing star, who is currently the WBA lightweight champion and Floyd Mayweather's protégé, turned himself in to the Coral Gables Police Department on Tuesday (February 4) after being charged with one count of "simple battery domestic violence." Gevonta's arrest came days after he was seen grabbing his ex-girlfriend, who is the mother of his child, by the throat during the game. While the neck-grabbing incident was caught on-camera, and later shared on social media, the argument reportedly continued backstage out of view of cameras.

Cops told TMZ, "As a result of an ongoing investigation after being notified through social media and the victim, on Feb. 1 2020, [Davis] was observed battering his former girlfriend whom [sic] have child together." Adding, "[Gevonta] surrendered himself, to the Coral Gables Police detectives assigned to the case."

Before his arrest, and as the video of his alleged attack began making its rounds on social media, the 25-year-old boxer put out a statement on Instagram denying that he attacked his ex, writing, "I never once hit her ... yeah I was aggressive and told her come on. That's the mother of my child. I would never hurt her."

Gervonta Davis Arrested For Domestic Violence After Viral Video Surfaces

This isn't the first time Gervonta's had trouble with the law. In 2017, the boxer was arrested for assault after allegedly punching a friend, TMZ reports. (The charge was later dropped). He was also arrested in 2018 for a street fight in Washington D.C.
