Tuesday on 2 Pros and a Cup of Joe, Jonas Knox, Brady Quinn and LaVar Arrington react to yet another egregious Roughing the Passer penalty, this time by Chiefs DT Chris Jones on Raiders QB Derek Carr on Monday Night Football. After the game, Chris Jones said the league ought to start reviewing these penalties like they did with Pass Interference years ago, but the guys are quick to point out how that was a failed experiment due to the subjective nature of the call.
Brady Quinn: "The problem is it's subjective, right? So whether that's on the onus of the official that's on the field or the report official, it really doesn't matter...
We put in a rule to allow pass interference to be reviewable. What happened? Went bye bye. It was awful. I don't know that putting more stoppage, more power in the hands of someone else up in a booth to then look at this and say, 'Oh is it roughing the passer or not? That's not going to change this. It's the NFL realizing that you can't protect every single quarterback from every hit that he's going to sustain. You just can't. There's nothing you can do about it. And you're also not making it a game in which it allows defensive players to play the way they're capable of and that's bad for the sport. So, I hate no matter what change they try to make or whatever they're trying to do now. It's bad for the game of football."
Jonas Knox: "It got to the point during that season where coaches stopped challenging pass interference calls because they basically looked around incredulously and said what's the point? Why waste a challenge? If we're depending on the guy who screwed up the call to begin with, to correct himself in real time and acknowledge I made a mistake. It's not happening."
LaVar Arrington: "That's not their job to tell you that they screwed up. Their job is to manage the game so they're not going to tell you they screwed up, because whether for good or for bad, for right or for wrong, they made the call... It is a part of the game A coach will always tell his players don't let the refs dictate the outcome of a game. That is a real statement. That is a true statement that all players that play the game have to embrace and acknowledge and understand that you're going to get calls that you don't like. There are going to be calls that you don't think are fair. It's just a part of it. You got to be able to outplay it."
