MLB today:

Minnesota scored 2 runs in the 9th to beat the White Sox, 10-9 (attendance: 11,000).

The Giants tallied 5 runs in the 8th and won 8-5 at Arizona.

The St. Louis at Cincinnati game began after a rain delay of 3 hours, 42 minutes; the Cardinals lead 6-3 in the 7th inning.

The Cubs won at Pittsburgh, 3-2 (attendance: 11,000).

The Marlins scored 4 runs in the 8th to beat Colorado, 8-5.

The Nationals trailed 2-0 in the 1st, but defeated the Mets, 8-2 (Ryan Zimmerman: 4 hits).


The MLB store’s two best-selling jerseys in the off-season belonged to David Ortiz and Dustin Pedroia of the Red Sox.  Derek Jeter’s was 3rd.


Doug McDermott (Creighton) was named AP’s college basketball Player of the Year.

He received 64 of the 65 votes.


The Coach of the Year is Gregg Marshall (Wichita State); he received 44 votes.  Virginia’s Tony Bennett got 13 votes.


Green Bay re-signed fullback John Kuhn.


Sandy Grossman, who directed 10 Super Bowl telecasts and 18 NBA Finals, died of cancer at age 78.



Venus Williams lost at the Family Circle Cup.
