Danny Ainge Did What He Needed, Not What He Wanted To Do

Want Vs. Need

The Boston Celtics are on to the 2nd round of the Eastern Conference Playoffs after beating the Milwaukee Bucks in a hard fought 7 game series. Six years ago, the team was in a similar spot, but with aging veterans Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett. The Miami Heat were the talk of the East with their Big 3 and the Celtics window was closed. Some people may have wanted to trade two of the cornerstone franchise players away but that's exactly what GM Danny Ainge did. Just last year, the Celtics got the one seed in the East but were outclassed by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Finals. Many loved what then-MVP candidate Isaiah Thomas was able to achieve as an undersized point guard. Ainge traded him Thomas to the Cavs in the blockbuster Kyrie Irving deal.

Jonas Knox looks back on the past six years of decision making in Boston and tells you why going need over want has helped Ainge rebuild the Celtics back into an Eastern Conference Powerhouse.
