The XFL was started 16 years ago in 2001 by WWE chairman Vince McMahon as an alternative to the NFL product. McMahon's league lasted only one season, but it might be on its way back. Over the weekend, word surfaced that McMahon was starting up a separate company called "Alpha Entertainment." Still many suspected this was nothing more than a ridiculous rumor.
The story now has a new layer as McMahon sold $100 million of his shares in WWE, leading many now to believe that the XFL could be on the verge of a return to the mainstream.
