Frustration Over New Helmet Rule Is Good For The NFL

The NFL's new helmet-contact rules will dramatically shift the way players approach a staple of the game they've played their whole lives: hard hits. The rule prohibits any use of the helmet to “butt, spear, or ram an opponent,” and violators are subject to result in penalties, fines or even ejections.

Steve and Jeffrey Gorman debate the impact the new rule will have not just on the sport of football, but how the game will be called. Reports that officials are confused over which hits will rightfully fall under the new rules has left the public doubting whether or not it's the right time for such a major change. But while referees still have time to get it right, there is little question that the NFL is celebrating the nationwide discussion of their sport.
