Announcer Suspended For Comparing Player to King Kong

“The announcer says this black basketball player is King Kong; if he says Godzilla or Goliath there is no issue… This seems to be a pretty aggressive stance by Iowa.”

Listen to Clay Travis comment on a recent story of an Iowa Hawkeyes basketball announcer being suspended for the rest of the season after comparing a Maryland player to King Kong on a Live radio broadcast.

The announcer, Gary Dolphin, has been a long time Hawkeyes radio play-by-by man for over 20 years, and was trying to analogize a dominant performance in the paint by Maryland big man Bruno Fernandes, who grabbed 11 rebounds in just 11 minutes of action.

Fernandes, an African-American player from Angola, is one of the most physically imposing big men in college basketball, but Iowa instantly took Dolphin off future broadcasts because of the racial sensitivities around any comparisons between black men and a gorilla.

Check out the full audio below as Clay thinks it was just another classic case of an innocuous comment going viral when an immensely over sensitive mob short on common sense decided Dolphin was their next target. Clay takes over a dozen calls to see what his audience thinks, including an entire segment of strictly African-American listeners to see what their reaction was.
