The former Minneapolis police officer who was arrested for allegedly killing George Floyd worked at the same nightclub as his victim. Former Officer Derek Chauvin spent 17 years working as an off-duty cop at El Nuevo Rodeo club and had overlapping shifts with Floyd during the last year.
The club's former owner, Maya Santamaria, told KSTP, that while the two men worked at the same time, she was unsure if they ever met. She explained that she hired more than a dozen security guards on nights when the club was busy.
"Chauvin was our off-duty police for almost the entirety of the 17 years that we were open," Santamaria said. "They were working together at the same time, it's just that Chauvin worked outside and the security guards were inside."
Chauvin was taken into custody on Friday (May 29) and charged with third degree murder and manslaughter.
