Floyd Mayweather Says He's Paying For George Floyd's Funeral

David Benavidez v J’Leon Love

Floyd Mayweather has offered to pay for George Floyd’s funeral and memorial services, and the late 46-year-old's family has accepted the offer.

Floyd, an unarmed black man, was killed last week in Minneapolis after Derek Chauvin, a white police officer, kneeled on his neck for more than eight minutes. Floyd's murder sparked protests around the world as millions call for justice not only in his case but also for the countless other black Americans who have been killed at the hand of police.

On Monday (June 1), ESPN reported that former boxing champion Mayweather had personally reached out to Floyd's family to ask if it would be okay if he handled the costs of his funeral, as well as additional expenses.

"He'll probably get mad at me for saying that, but yes, [Mayweather] is definitely paying for the funeral," Leonard Ellerbe, the CEO of Mayweather Promotions, told the outlet, adding the boxer didn't want to talk about his gesture.

Floyd will reportedly have four memorial services — the first in his hometown of Houston on June 9 and the three others in Minnesota, Charlotte and another location to be named at a later date, TMZ reports. All services will be paid for by Mayweather.
