Dan Patrick: “Yesterday afternoon I got some information from a source. This was the same source who had the information on the Pac-12 and Big Ten shutting down their seasons, so I trust him implicitly. He said ‘October 10th’ is the date that Big Ten teams are circling and that that’s what they’re hoping for… They have to be able to accomplish the updated safety measures and procedures. The reason why they said October 10th is they want to be involved in the College Football Playoff. You want to get into the Final Four. Wisconsin is loaded, and Ohio State is loaded this year. I was told October 10th because that is the latest they can play and still get involved in the playoffs. This is what I’m told by my source: ‘There are teams that want to get started right now and be in position to be in the playoffs. There are definitely other schools in the Big Ten that don’t want to play. The President gets involved, and the fact that there’s no leadership and different agendas makes it difficult to think they can come together, but the Big Ten has itself to blame. Playing in domes during the winter with depleted rosters in the spring for no championship is not an alternative. They have more money than anyone and they rushed to judgement, and now they’re going to watch other conferences start, and possibly play a full schedule.’ That’s all the information I have. I’m not saying they’re going to play, but this is the date they are targeting and there are schools who won’t play. You might actually have a true Big Ten. Maybe you don’t have Rutgers, you’re not going to have Northwestern, maybe Illinois, and I’d probably say to Maryland ‘ehh, you don’t need to play this year.’ Maybe you’ll just have 10 teams and you can have a 10-game schedule, but you want to be able to qualify and there is a lot of money at stake… Ohio State and Wisconsin definitely want to play, and then you throw in Penn State, Michigan, and we know Nebraska and Iowa want to play… The report is they have a target date, there is no guarantee they come back October 10, but if they do, that’s the date they’ve circled because they can get a schedule in and still have teams compete for the National Championship.” (Full Segment Above)

After originally postponing its fall football season on August 11th, the conference has undergone much turmoil between programs and university presidents who want to play football, and others who are content with a spring season or full postponement altogether.
Dan’s source says schools are beginning to realize that a spring season would effectively be improbable given that they’d be practicing in a bubble all winter just to stage a meaningless season in the spring without any of the NFL prospects who would be getting ready for the draft, and for a result that would have zero College Football Playoff implications.
Dan says his source says the Big Ten is fully prepared to play a season without all of its members, as schools like Wisconsin, Ohio State, and Michigan – the conference’s most elite programs, don’t want to lose 2020 as a chance to compete for a National Championship.
