Joel Klatt Says the College Football Playoff is Bad For College Football

Joel Klatt: “The College Football Playoff you can make a strong argument has hurt the sport. One hundred percent. It’s a self-perpetuating cycle that the most qualility players go to the only teams that go to the playoff, and then those teams go back to the playoff and get the best players, and then go back to the playoffs and get the best players, and on and on… If you took Ohio State, Clemson, Alabama, and Oklahoma, they’ve made 17 College Football Playoff appearances. That’s great, right? We love to celebrate 'EXCELLENCE'. The rest of the country combined has 7 appearances. COMBINED. The separation of the classes has become more significant due to the playoff than before the playoff. To be honest, it’s made our industry lazy because everything out of the top 4 is like ‘WELL, THAT’S NO GOOD!’… The Playoff has made commentary a bit lazy because we don’t acknowledge what’s going on at some of these other programs.” (Full Segment Above)

Listen to Joel Klatt join The Herd to explain to Colin Cowherd why he thinks the College Football Playoff is bad for college football, as the four-team event has been the standard for the sports’ postseason since January of 2015.

Check out the segment above as Klatt details why this ‘TOP 4’ obsession with college football has made fans and analysts alike abandon all the great storylines beyond this particular line of demarcation, and make the sports’ culture cater only to the interests of the ‘Big 4’ elite schools like Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, and Oklahoma.
