The Miami Marlins have hired Kim Ng as their new general manager, making her the first female general manager in major league history. Ng brings decades of baseball experience to the Marlins.
Before joining the Marlins, she was senior vice president of baseball operations for MLB. She started her career in Major League Baseball working for the Chicago White Sox from 1990-96. In 1998, she joined the New York Yankees until 2001. She was then hired as the assistant general manager by the Los Angeles Dodgers. She held that position until 2011 when she went to work for the Commissioner's Office. The teams she worked for made eight postseason appearances and won three World Series championships.
"I entered Major League Baseball as an intern, and, after decades of determination, it is the honor of my career to lead the Miami Marlins as their next general manager," Ng said in a statement. "We are building for the long term in South Florida, developing a forward-thinking, collaborative, creative baseball operation made up of incredibly talented and dedicated staff who have, over the last few years, laid a great foundation for success."
"This challenge is one I don't take lightly. When I got into this business, it seemed unlikely a woman would lead a Major League team, but I am dogged in the pursuit of my goals. My goal is now to bring championship baseball to Miami. I am both humbled and eager to continue building the winning culture our fans expect and deserve."
Ng takes over for a team that many believe overachieved in the COVID-shortened 2020 season. The Marlins went 31-29 and advanced to the second round of the playoffs, despite dealing with a COVID outbreak early in the season. Don Mattingly was named NL Manager of the Year for leading the young team to the playoffs.
