Colin Cowherd: Baker Mayfield’s Entire Reputation is at Stake vs. Steelers

Colin Cowherd: “Something happened to Baker Mayfield yesterday that was not ideal. Kevin Stefanski won’t be on the sidelines as head coach or play-caller, and he’s going to be missing a really good guard and backup wide receiver – it’s not ideal. But let’s not make any excuses. If Baker gets rolled this weekend he is officially a ‘GAME MANAGER’, not a franchise quarterback. ‘Game Manager’ means everything is perfect for you and THEN you can win games… The quarterback drives the bus on this, NOT the play-caller. You say he’s missing a top guard – Aaron Rodgers didn’t have David Bakhtiari for several games this year, the best pass-blocking left tackle, and he threw for 15 touchdowns and no picks. Patrick Mahomes has not had Mitchell Schwartz, a Pro Bowl offensive lineman, since Week 6, and he’s not lost a game. Lamar Jackson has actually gotten better without Ronnie Stanley. You think Josh Allen would unravel because he’s missing a backup receiver and a guard?? Those guys are franchise quarterbacks, they’re not game managers… Baker, NO EXCUSES, you get rolled and you’re a ‘game manager.’ Play-calling is not winning the game, PLAYERS are winning the game. I’m seeing all these built-in excuses. Josh Allen would not completely unravel if Sean McDermott wasn’t on the sideline. He would still be 6’6”, move elegantly, with a shotgun arm, and an unbelievable amount of quarterback confidence. Let’s see you go be a leader.” (Full Video Above)

Listen to Colin Cowherd explain why he thinks Sunday night’s Browns at Steelers game will put Baker Mayfield’s career at a crossroads, as Colin thinks a poor performance by Mayfield in Pittsburgh would officially brand his career as a ‘game manager’ and not a franchise quarterback.

Positive COVID-19 tests will force the Browns to be without head coach Kevin Stefanki and starting offensive guard Joel Bitonio for their first playoff game since 2002, but Colin says he doesn’t want to hear the ‘built-in excuse’ if Mayfield loses and doesn’t play well, saying a ‘franchise QB’ like Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, or Josh Allen would barely be affected by the loss of a head coach and a starting guard.

Check out the segment above as Colin dares Baker to ‘go be a leader’, and win the biggest start of his career.
