Baker Mayfield Trolls Colin Cowherd After 'Backwards Hat Guy' Segment

Colin Cowherd on Friday’s episode of The Herd: “What I’m about to say will be viewed as a little thing, and I of course do not see it as a little thing… Baker is wearing his hat backwards… Interesting, what happened to Carson Wentz’s season when he went to the podium with his hat on backwards?? YOU’RE BAD, SEASON UNRAVELS. We looked back at Aaron Rodgers this morning; 22 times we have footage of him at a podium or on TV this year with a beanie on, or the hat on forward. ‘Backwards hat guy’ does it and never gets it. It’s not ‘quarterback-ial.’ The quarterbacks I like this weekend are Big Ben – hat forward. Brees – always hat forward. Lamar Jackson doesn’t wear a hat, we couldn’t find a picture. Brady last 15 years – hat forward. Goff – hat forward, and Josh Allen – hat forward. [While looking at a picture of Baker Mayfield with his hat backwards] LOOK AT THIS, IT JUST SAYS ‘PLAYOFF LOSS’ doesn’t it?? Doesn’t that just say ‘down 12, sack, fumble, minute and a half to play?’ It doesn’t say ‘playoff winner to me’, it says things are unraveling in Pittsburgh this weekend… The last quarterback to wear a hat backwards at the weekly podium, ONE did it this year – Carson Wentz. And what happened to his season?? You guys say it doesn’t matter. It is ‘hat on backwards karma. It is BAD, and another reason I like the Steelers this weekend.” (Video at Bottom of Page)

Cleveland Browns' quarterback Baker Mayfield took an obvious jab at Colin Cowherd moments after their shocking postseason beat down of the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night, beginning his postgame interview by turning his hat from forward to backwards.

Colin, of course, has long led ‘backwards hat guy’ segments on his show, questioning the personality traits, and leadership qualities of a supposed franchise quarterback who would wear his hat backwards during a weekly press conference.

The partially tongue-in-cheek segments have been around for multiple years but really started to gain steam this season as Wentz, a player who has been spotted wearing his hat backwards at press conferences this year, had by far the worst season of his career in 2020.

Here’s Colin’s reasoning towards his rejection of backwards hat wearers at the QB position.

“There are certain things you just wouldn’t wear when you were introduced to the Pope or the President. Time, place, location, and assignment matters. If you wanna wear a hat on backwards in your garage, in your yard, at the beach, at the gym in your car, I don’t care. I don’t care if you wear it backwards as a baseball player or basketball player. I don’t even care if you wear it backwards as a linebacker, cornerback, receiver, tight end, or offensive linemen. But if you are a quarterback and have your once-a-week podium discussion and you have the Eagles banner and major corporate sponsor logo behind you, you’re telling me THIS [puts on backwards Eagles hat] for a $5 billion franchise is no different from THIS [puts hat on forward]?? I think you’re wrong… Some of you won’t be as successful as Carson so you just won’t get it. It’s not about wearing the hat, it’s the symbolism and the respect. If you wanna look like a frat boy, go for it.”
