A former Olympic swimmer who won a silver and bronze medal is behind bars, accused of running a massive drug smuggling ring in Australia. Authorities said that Scott Miller was the mastermind of the operation, which supplied methamphetamine all over the state of New South Wales.
Investigators found $1.6 million in illegal drugs hidden in candles at the home of Miller and another suspect, who was not identified. They also found heroin and $60,000 in cash.
"For all intents and purposes, they looked like regular candles, but they weren't laced with fragrance, they were laced with death and misery," said Detective John Watson.
Miller was charged with supplying illegal drugs and running a criminal organization. He was denied bail and will remain in jail until his next court date in April.
Authorities also arrested a 47-year-old man and charged him for supplying illegal drugs and participating in a criminal organization.
Officials said the investigation will continue and that both men could face more charges.
"This was not a small operation," Watson said. "They were well organized and well-financed."
Miller won two medals in the 1996 Summer Olympics. He took home the silver in the 100-meter butterfly and was part of the bronze-medal winning team in the 4 x 100-meter medley.
