Joel Klatt's Biggest Takeaways From the NFL Draft's First Round

Listen to Fox Sports 1 college football analyst Joel Klatt join The Herd to discuss his biggest takeaways from Thursday night’s first round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Probably the biggest surprise of the first round was the San Francisco 49ers passing on Mac Jones and taking North Dakota State’s Trey Lance with the no. 3 pick. Many experts had the NFL-ready Jones pegged as a likely dance partner with head coach Kyle Shanahan, but Lance looks to be the more talented, higher ceiling prospect, who can sit behind incumbent Jimmy Garoppolo for his first season.

Other surprises included the Eagles leapfrogging the rival-Giants to take Devonta Smith, the Raiders selecting a lineman some had graded in the second round, Alex Leatherwood, the Giants passing on Micah Parsons to trade down to 20, and the Jaguars taking Trevor Lawrence’s Clemson teammate Travis Ettiene despite already having former rookie back James Robinson on the depth chart.

Check out Klatt’s thoughts above.
