Brian Flores' legal team releases statement on the Texans' hiring of Lovie Smith:
“Mr. Flores is happy to hear that the Texans have hired a Black head coach, Lovie Smith, as Mr. Flores’ goal in bringing his case is to provide real opportunities for Black and minority candidates to be considered for coaching and executive positions within the NFL... However, we would be remiss not to mention that Mr. Flores was one of three finalists for the Texans’ head coach position and, after a great interview and mutual interest, it is obvious that the only reason Mr. Flores was not selected was his decision to stand up against racial inequality across the NFL.”
Doug Gottlieb: “Brian Flores is not necessarily wrong that he didn’t get the job because of the lawsuit but you don't say it. What are you doing?? Do you want to come across as the most unlikeable human being on earth??... I told you, he’s TOXIC. The reason he didn’t get the job is not because he’s suing the NFL because of racial injustice, it’s because he’s SUING THE NFL. You can sue the NFL for anything but it made you unhirable, and this makes you unlikeable. This is where Brian Flores DOESN’T GET IT, and didn’t get it when he got fired in Miami. I hear people all the time are like ‘Well, he’s a great coach’, no one is saying that he's not, but the ‘coaching’ is only a portion of being a head coach. You have to manage ‘up’ [with the front office] and manage ‘down’ [with the players], and he couldn’t manage up. The facts are different from the feelings, they just are, and here are the facts: the general manager in Miami, the assistant general manager, the director of player personnel – they are ALL Black men. They wanted him GONE. It was an ‘us’ or ‘him’, and the owner was like ‘I’m going to side with these guys.’ When I said Flores needed to be more contrite, anyone who has ever lost a job or lost an opportunity – at some point you just got to go ‘ya know, sometimes it actually IS me.’ It’s ME and the way I handled myself. He may have been misperceived, it’s totally reasonable to go like ‘ya know, I probably came across as a little brash, a little harsh, it was my first job, I had only been in New England, I only watched Bill Belichick and how he handled things…’ His story of the disconnect with non-Patriot people is the same story we saw in Detroit [Matt Patricia], the same story we’ve seen with Charlie Weis, the same story we saw with Eric Mangini; you go through all the Patriots’ assistants it’s all the same thing, and he’s the only one going ‘nah, it wasn’t me, it was them.’ I thought it would have worked in Houston, and then when he started suing I told you ‘you can’t hire a guy who’s telling you the whole league is racist.’ And yeah, it probably did force their hand and make them hire a Black head coach, but you know what you don’t do? You don’t pee on someone’s parade, dude, like, what are you doing? That’s just not cool at all, and people like Lovie Smith, and he seems to be an easy to like human being.” (Full Audio Above)
