Colin Cowherd on Paying Big For Deebo Samuel: 'He's Not Going to Age Well'

Colin Cowherd: “The trend I see with young media people is to just ‘PAY EVERYBODY!’ It’s like, NO, that’s not how it works. You can’t just pay everyone, outside of baseball there is a salary cap. Whenever I see somebody get paid everybody in the media celebrates, and I’m like ‘you guys ever run a business?’ You can’t just pay everyone what you wanna pay them. Right now we have a housing bubble, and a wide receiver bubble. This one looks like an easy one, but I’ll take you inside what the 49ers are thinking for Deebo Samuel. Deebo is a very unique player, he’s a running back, he’s a wide receiver, and they use him in a variety of positions. He’s fantastic, big, bruising, and physical. You should just pay him what he wants, right? Yesterday he took all his stuff with the Niners down on social media, which is juvenile but it’s a trend. He wants to get paid top of the market but I want you to think about this if you ran the Niners – he gets hurt a lot. He plays one way and he’s not going to age well. He’s never played a full season, and two years ago he played 7 games. George Kittle is your other dynamic offensive player and he’s expensive, and he gets hurt a lot. You’re trying to beat the Rams in that division? Aaron Donald never gets hurt, Jalen Ramsey isn’t hurt, and Stafford is never hurt. Do you wanna have your two best offensive players, Deebo and Kittle, often unavailable? They both play one way. They are wildly physical, Hall of Fame talents. Kyle Shanahan’s offense leans into these types of players. He likes to draft big, physical players. When I hear ‘PAY DEEBO!’ there is a lot that goes into it. He’s essentially becoming a quasi-running back. Go ask the Dallas Cowboys what it’s like to pay big money to a running back early. How’s that work with Zeke? It’s why they couldn’t keep Amari. Go ask the Rams how Todd Gurley worked out. Go ask the Carolina Panthers on Christian McCaffrey. How did those things work out? Not good. If you sign Deebo for big money think about your four crucial players for the Niners: Trent Williams, expensive and has had some injuries, Kittle, Garoppolo, and Deebo Samuel. On any given Sunday, none are available. On the Rams everyone is always available. I like Deebo a lot, but as he’s been moved to running back, that’s the last offensive position that you can hit a guy as hard as you want, wherever you want. He is old school, and him and Kittle look like 1970s football players. They are heat-seeking contact missiles. I would franchise tag him.” (Full Video Above)

Listen to Colin Cowherd explain why he thinks the San Francisco 49ers should tread very lightly when it comes to paying wide receiver/running back hybrid Deebo Samuel a lucrative long-term deal the likes of Davante Adams, Stefon Diggs, Tyreek Hill, Amari Cooper, and Chris Godwin.

Check out the video above as Colin details why he thinks the Niners should franchise tag Deebo, and wait till the latest moment possible to pay him what he wants.
