Police Investigating Claim that College Baseball Team Was Poisoned

Local police are investigating accusations that the Kansas Wesleyan University baseball team was poisoned after a foreign substance was found in a water cooler used during a doubleheader against rival Bethany College.

Lindsborg Police Chief Michael Davis confirmed the department's investigation after the team accused Bethany of putting paint thinner in its water coolers on Sunday (April 24).

“We are looking into it and both schools are cooperating with us,” Davis said via Kansas.com, adding that the department planned to interview several individuals as part of what was expected to be a "lengthy process to look into everything."

A photo shared by the Twitter account @BarstoolKwu -- which isn't directly affiliated with KWU or Barstool Sports -- on Sunday showed what appeared to be contaminated water in a large cooler.

Davis confirmed the school filed a police report on Monday (April 25) and said it's typical for the home team -- which was Bethany during the doubleheader -- to provide its opponent's water, but didn't confirm that was the case over the weekend, Kansas.com reports.

Bethany Athletic Director Laura Moreno confirmed the school was investigating the situation to the Associated Press.

Kansas Wesleyan Athletic Director Steve Wilson also confirmed his school was investigating the situation to Kansas.com via text.

“We are currently conducting a thorough, in-depth review of this situation, with the priority of putting the health and safety of our student-athletes first,” Wilson wrote.
