After Jeanie Buss cleaned house in the Lakers front office mafia style, Colin Cowherd thinks one of her unlucky victims in GM Mitch Kupchak had it coming after recent off-seasons of useless signings.
Cowherd thinks the Luol Deng (four years, $72), and Timofey Mozgoz (four-year, $64 million) moves were two of the worst free agent signings of the decade and ultimately were enough to become the posterboys for Kupchak’s evisceration.
The 12-year veteran Deng is having the worst season of his career by a longshot, averaging just 7.8 points on 38.9% shooting. The 30-year-old lead-footed center Mozgov is only averaging 14.3 minutes in February, and most believe the only rhyme or reason for his massive $64 million payout was only because of his 2015 Finals performance when then-Cavs coach David Blatt went big against the Warriors and allowed Mozgov to average 14 points for the series, including a 28-point performance in Game 4.
Although Kupchak was a competent drafter, Cowherd said his taciturn demeanor was enough to alienate free agents upon their in-person visits.
