The Celtics would have definitely given up a Nets pick and valuable cap space if they were going to acquire Jimmy Butler or Paul George, and they would have to be sure that they could surpass LeBron in the East with the team if they came out of a trade without their picks.
Paul George might not have re-signed with the team in two years, and Jimmy Butler makes the better but not quite better than Cleveland. So they instead chose to sit on their picks and try it again at the draft.
