Doug Gottlieb: Cardinals Look Desperate Signing 'Over the Hill' JJ Watt

Doug Gottlieb: Cardinals Were 'Desperate' Signing 'Over the Hill' JJ Watt
Doug Gottlieb: “Do I think you have to have a pass rush? Absolutely, but this strikes me as a little bit of desperation on Arizona’s part. It doesn’t make sense to me. It makes total sense to JJ's bottom line, otherwise, I don’t get this. You need a complete defense, and there are lots of pieces that need to be added. Why would you this piece? Especially when the salary cap is staying flat. I get you’ve got Kyler Murray on the rookie deal, but there are so many other holes that I don’t think THIS pass rush will close them up, especially how much Watt has been hurt previously, and now he’s older… Guys that are hurt when they’re young don’t usually become super healthy when they get older… JJ Watt was overpaid, and slightly over the hill.” (Full Audio Segment Above)

Listen to Doug Gottlieb discuss Colin Cowherd’s optimistic take on the Arizona Cardinals signing JJ Watt to a two-year, $31 million deal on Monday, as Doug has more of a critical analysis on the ‘desperate’ move, for an ‘over the hill’ Watt.

Watt turns 32 later this March and has accounted for just 9 sacks the last two seasons combined. Watt was a first-team All-Pro in 2018 when he finished with 16 sacks and led the league in forced fumbles.

Check out the audio above as Gottlieb details why he doesn’t think the Cardinals made the right move in trying to use Watt to retool an Arizona defense that ranked 20th in takeaways, and 22nd in rushing yards allowed in 2020.
