The NHL is considering expanding its presence in Atlanta, with three groups expressing interest in establishing a franchise in the city. Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly shared this development with ESPN on Wednesday (September 2). Among the interested parties is a group led by former NHL player Anson Carter, who is exploring locations north of Atlanta for a potential arena.

The other two groups have already made significant strides in their plans. The Alpharetta City Council has approved zoning changes for a redevelopment project that includes a 20,000-seat arena, while Krause Sports & Entertainment is progressing with plans for an arena in South Forsyth. Both projects hinge on the NHL granting an expansion team to either location.

Daly emphasized the importance of a thorough market analysis to ensure the success of a new team in Atlanta, noting that the city has changed significantly since previous NHL teams, the Flames and the Thrashers, relocated. He stated, "I would argue that Atlanta has changed dramatically and significantly over time."

In addition to Atlanta, the NHL is also exploring expansion opportunities in Texas, with Houston and Austin as potential locations. According to the Bozeman Daily Chronicle, the league is working with Houston billionaire Dan Friedkin, who has agreed to a $2 billion expansion fee. The Texas team could debut within three years if approved by the NHL Board of Governors.

Furthermore, the NHL is considering a return to the Phoenix area, with at least two groups expressing interest in bringing a team back to the region. Daly noted that the location of the arena is crucial for success in Phoenix.

The NHL Board of Governors will receive an update on the expansion process at their meeting in New York on September 22. While the league is exploring these opportunities, Daly cautioned that expansion is not guaranteed, stating, "I don't want to get ahead of the board."
