Jason Whitlock: Deion Cares More About Shedeur's Draft Stock Than Winning

Jason Whitlock: “It comes off very Johnny Manziel-ish [on Shedeur Sanders taunting opposing teams' student sections after Colorado wins], and that did not go over well in the NFL. He’s in a protective bubble with his dad there. Their offensive line is not great but I’m not sure if it’s as bad as it’s being forced to look. They could have established the running-game. The running game was there for them against Arizona State. When they chose to run the ball they were pretty effective, they just wouldn’t stick with it. I’m not sure if Shedeur is holding the football as much as it is Colorado is throwing the ball and running a hurry-up offense constantly because Deion wants his son to have the best stats in college football. He’s leading the nation in passing yards. It’s no different in high school when a dad would be the head coach and his son, a 6’1”, 6’2” guard, would average 48 points a game because his dad built everything around his son. That’s what we’re seeing here with Shedeur. I think he’s got some talent, but are they utilizing him in a way to win games or are they utilizing him in a way to showcase him for the NFL? That’s what I think is going on here with Deion and his son. It’s not about winning. As it relates to offense, it's about showcasing Shedeur. // Anthony Hankerson averaged nearly six yards a carry on his ten carries in a game that was close throughout [vs. Arizona State]. They had a chance to run the ball. They ran the ball 30 times but 11 of those are Shedeur either getting sacked or it counting as a run. He threw it 42 times. I'm telling you, there was an opportunity to run the football with Hankerson, take some pressure off that offensive line, and establish the play-action passing game-- which they don't do consistently. I'm glad you brought up the Dan Hawkins deal [talking to co-host Steve Kim] because I knew there had to be some examples of head coaches with their sons at quarterback. I think it's one of the most difficult balancing acts. Trust me, the kids on that team can see Deion favoring his son and running a team to showcase his son at quarterback. // Deion after the game took a dump on his team. People will question the sincerity of what I'm about to say, but I promise you it's 1000% sincere. I actually left that game Saturday night halfway-impressed with Colorado. Stadium was full, excited crowd, they go on the road and pull off a victory. You go on the road after playing USC and there was a chance of an emotional letdown... I was more impressed with what they did against Arizona State, at Arizona State, then I was the week before when they played a 'close on the scoreboard' game against USC. Deion celebrates a loss against USC and then turns around and takes a dump on a victory against Arizona State, and he’s wondering why his team isn't playing with the fire and the emotion early in games that he wants? They just celebrated a loss the week before and then turns around and takes a dump on them for winning. I’m looking at a very inexperienced head coach that’s flying by the seat of his pants and is worried about his son, his son’s NFL future, and his son being in the Heisman Trophy race. Deion is taking care of his son but I’m not sure he’s taking care of that football team.” (Full Segment Above)

Watch Jason Whitlock of Fearless explain why he thinks Colorado football offensive coordinator Sean Lewis has the ‘toughest job in college football’ trying to run an offense with Deion Sanders’ son Shedeur Sanders at quarterback, saying it’s apparent that Deion is pushing for play calls that will showcase his son’s playing ability as much as possible, even if it means operating a flawed game plan.

Check out the segment above as Whitlock expands on why Sanders is ‘flying by the seat of his pants’ as Colorado’s head coach, and tendering to his son’s NFL Draft stock and Heisman Trophy candidacy more than what’s in the best interests of the Buffaloes.
