Father Thanks 49ers Pick Dre Greenlaw for Preventing His Daughter's Rape

San Francisco 49ers' fifth-round draft pick was praised by the father of one his college classmates for something he did as a freshman at the University of Arkansas. A few hours after Dre Greenlaw was drafted,Gerry Dales shared a story about how Greenlaw prevented his daughter from being potentially raped while they were at a party during their freshman year.

"My daughter went to a college party when she was freshman," Gerry wrote on Twitter. "She knew very few people at the party, and also didn't have a ton of experience drinking. Someone slipped something into her drink when she wasn't paying attention."

Luckily, Dre, who knew the girl from high school was at the kegger and prevented the man from leaving the party with the intoxicated young woman.

"And when that guy tried to steer my daughter out the front door, he stopped the guy and said "she's not going anywhere."

The unidentified man left the party, and Gerry says that he was never seen around campus again.

Gerry explained that he did not share the story sooner because Dre and his daughter were underage at the time and he was worried that they could get in trouble for being at a party with alcohol.

"He was a starter on the Razorbacks. His place was not secure. He was underage and at a kegger. He wasn't drinking, but if there was a fight he was risking getting thrown off the team. In some ways, he was risking everything."

Gerry says that he is thankful that Dre had his daughter's back and is "a good kid with a good heart."

I didn't ever tell this story, because maybe someone would say "oh, he shouldn't have been at that party." Maybe not. But he had my daughter's back, and for that I will always owe him. So, do me a favor. Root for Dre. He's a good kid with a good heart.

Greenlaw spoke with PEOPLE about the incident and explained that he "was just looking out for her when I saw her."

“She wasn’t in the best state, and at first, maybe I thought she was drunk, but then she told me she needed help and that somebody might have put something in her cup," Dre said. "Then I realized she really needed help.”

He called one of her friends to pick her up from the party and stayed with her until her friend arrived.

“I just know I instantly stopped having fun and paid her my full attention,” Greenlaw said.
