Los Angeles Angels: "It is with great sorrow that we report Tyler Skaggs passed away earlier today in Texas. Tyler has, and always will be, an important part of the Angels Family. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Carli and his entire family during this devastating time."
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred: “I am deeply saddened by today’s tragedy in Texas. All of us at Major League Baseball extend our deepest condolences to Tyler’s wife Carli, their family, their friends and all of his Angels’ teammates and colleagues. We will support the Angels’ organization through this most difficult period, and we will make a variety of resources available to Tyler’s teammates and other members of the baseball family.”
Twenty-seven-year-old Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Tyler Skaggs was found dead in Texas in the team's hotel room just two days after he had pitched at home against the Oakland Athletics on Saturday.
No details have emerged in the cause of his death, and the team's scheduled Monday night game versus the Texas Rangers has been cancelled.
Skaggs was a former first round draft pick who was once one of the game’s most coveted pitching prospects, ranking as the #10 best MLB prospect in 2013 according to MLB.com.
Skaggs had gone 28-38 with a 4.41 ERA in seven seasons with the Diamondbacks and Angels and was known as a strikeout pitcher with 476 K’s in 520.2 innings.
Skaggs was a Southern California native, graduating from Santa Monica High School, before becoming a supplementary first round pick to the Angels in 2009.
