Why Jared Goff is Not a Franchise Quarterback

Ben Maller: “Perception is not reality in Jared Goff’s case. Considering the Super Bowl performance, the Rams have just given Jared Goff the greatest mulligan in NFL history. The guy went out there and vomited all over the field against the Patriots. He sucked and the Rams are just going to sweep that under the rug and pretend that didn’t happen??” (Full Audio at Bottom of Page)

Listen to Ben Maller explain why he’s not a fan of the Los Angeles Rams giving quarterback Jared Goff a four-year contract extension through the 2024 season in a move that obviously shows the team is anointing the 24-year-old their franchise player.

The extension is worth $134 million, $110 million of that guaranteed, for the two-time Pro Bowler.

Goff has had an strange career. After putting up one of the worst rookie seasons in NFL history in 2016, when he went 0-7 with a QBR of 18.9, he compiled a 65/26 touchdown to interception ratio the next two years combined, in route to a 24-7 record.

However, Goff, faded greatly during the second half last year, with one four-game stretch between Weeks 13 and 16 where he threw just touch two touchdowns compared to six interceptions.

Goff’s arm talents have always been there, but his critics shift a lot of his success to offensive maestro Sean McVay, and his ability to always put Goff in the best positions to find the easiest targets...Something Jeff Fisher obviously failed at.

Maller wonders why a guy coming off a horrific postseason where he only completed 55.6% of his passes for one touchdown and two interceptions in three games, including his 19/38, 0 TDs clunker in the Super Bowl is being handsomely rewarded.
