Paul George Didn't Deserve to Have His Number Retired at Fresno State

Doug Gottlieb: “Paul George doesn’t hold any records at Fresno State. He stayed there two years and averaged almost 17 a game his sophomore year before declaring for the NBA Draft. In his two years at Fresno State his teams finished 13-21 and 15-18, and he gets his number retired?? How do we feel about that? To have your number retired you either have to be the best player on a historically great team or just be an incredible player regardless of how your team does. He’s blossomed into an incredible NBA player, but he was not an incredible college player. Fresno State has had some really good players and some really good teams, and I feel like they’re only retiring his number for what he did in the NBA, and nothing for what he did at Fresno.” (Full Audio at Bottom of Page)

Listen to Doug Gottlieb explain why he doesn’t agree with the Fresno State basketball program retiring former alumni player Paul George’s number 24 number over the weekend.

Despite being one of the top 10 players in the NBA and the sidekick to Kawhi Leonard on what could be the NBA’s next dynasty, Gottlieb wonders why a guy who only averaged 14.3 points as a freshman and 16.8 points as a sophomore on two terrible Fresno State teams that both finished under .500 was deserving of having his number retired.

George joins Tyler Johnson of the Miami Heat as the only current FSU Bulldogs in the NBA, and other notable NBA alumni include Rafer Alston, Courtney Alexander, and Melvin Ely.
