Colin Cowherd: “Bill Belichick is a football historian and he knows platooning quarterbacks does not work in this league. Media people, FIGURE IT OUT. You don’t think Belichick has a plan with three A+ college quarterback prospects available? A position he needs to fill? Belichick is suddenly doing the opposite of what he’s done the last 20 years. He let smart, high IG, veteran, and mostly affordable players go, and didn’t address key holes in free agency. They don’t even have a tight end who has ever taken a snap in the NFL who can play… This year, with three A+ college quarterbacks, and with older beat up Cam and Brian Hoyer, he’s talking about platooning quarterbacks. He’s got no plan, and he’s not addressing anything in free agency… Folks, c’mon, when the Patriots go 5-11 or 6-10, have the 8th pick, they’ve got like 11 picks, and nobody except Jacksonville needs a quarterback, they’re INSURING, not TANKING.” (Full Segment Above)
Listen to Colin Cowherd explain why he thinks Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots are purposely having one of the most peculiar off-seasons in franchise history, as Colin believes Belichick sees a loaded 2021 NFL Draft class at the quarterback position on the horizon with Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, Jamie Newman, Brock Purdy, and Trey Lance, potentially becoming available to New England early in the first round in the event of a poor season.
Even though Colin is not going to straight up say New England is ‘tanking’, Colin firmly believes that the Patriots are going out of their way to disarm their personnel, and make it impossible for the team to contend in 2020. Colin thought it was telling that Belichick told reporters that the team will consider a quarterberback 'platoon' with Cam Newton and Brian Hoyer. Not just because it was highly unexpected for Belichick to actually open up to the media on strategy, but because a QB platoon at the professional level seems like a completely unhinged idea for the supposed greatest coach of all time.
