Colin Cowherd: “Dwayne Haskins ‘looked’ like a number one pick at quarterback. Big, strong, stands in the pocket, can take a hit, you can bang off him… But I asked Urban Meyer once if he’s ready to start in the NFL and he was like ‘Nah, not yet.’ It was a little bit of a warning flag. That told me it was probably some maturity issues… Haskins wasn’t mature enough and just wasn’t ready to run a $5 billion franchise. Every 3-4 years a talented quarterback comes out of college – Johnny Manziel, Baker Mayfield, Jameis Winston – and I question their maturity. The media and fan bases always freak out, but do you know why I question maturity? Two words – DWYANE HASKINS. Washington just wasted two years babysitting a quarterback… This is the one position in American sports, and perhaps international sports where two words are really important. Are you ‘uniquely mature’? I don’t think Dwayne Haskins is any less mature than the average 22-year-old, but when you draft a quarterback he’s going to have to be almost square like Andrew Luck, Tom Brady, and Russell Wilson. ‘Uniquely mature’ for a 22-year-old. He’s going to have to deal with the press – the linebacker won’t. He’s going to have to deal with some owners and sponsors – the safety won’t. He’s going to have to memorize a playbook, not only for himself but for his teammates – the defensive tackle won’t… Sometimes you don’t find yourself until you’re 32 years old, but owners can’t wait for that… Washington spent the last two years babysitting and you just can’t do it at that position.” (Full Video Above)
Listen to Colin Cowherd discuss Dwayne Haskins’ unprecedented exit from the Washington Football Team, and explain why he thinks the 22-year-old ultimately became one of the most derided first-round draft picks in NFL history.
Check out the video above as Colin details why he thinks the quarterback position is the most unique in all of sports, and why it’s compulsively demanding of 21 and 22-year-olds to instantly become one of the most mature individuals in a locker room full of grown men.
