On Today’s “Straight Outta Vegas with RJ Bell” RJ Bell and the Straight Outta Vegas crew react to the New Orleans Saints naming QB Jameis Winston the Week 1 starter. Winston entered the preseason as the odds on favorite to be named the starter according to Vegas, however many predicted head coach Sean Payton would decide to start Taysom Hill instead. Hill has been Payton’s “project” under former QB Drew Brees for a few seasons, and Payton loves his versatility. But RJ believes that Winston clearly beat out Hill in camp and preseason. Vegas projects Winston will throw for 4,200.5 yards, which would be his 2nd best yardage season of his career.
“Sean Payton is one of the best coaches in the game, and I would argue he is the best offensive mind in the game. He took Drew Brees, an undersized QB coming off an injury, and made him a Hall Of Fame QB. Jameis Winston entered the preseason as the odds on favor to be named the starter, but people assumed Payton had a bias toward Taysom Hill. The fact that Winston beat out Hill, tells me this decision wasn’t close for Payton. It will be interesting to see how Winston’s performance will impact Payton’s legacy as a head coach.”
