A new book detailing Coach K’s retirement sheds some light on the whole process of naming his successor. There were many candidates interested in the job, but Krzyzewski tapped Jon Scheyer over everyone, including Tommy Amaker. Now Amaker is heartbroken and, according to the book, Coach K was disingenuous about his decision when letting Amaker down. Doug Gottlieb thinks Coach K should have been honest with Amaker about the decision instead of making excuses.
Doug Gottlieb: “You can’t go to Tommy Amaker with, ‘It would create an awkward dynamic.’ You can’t...who cares? It’s the Duke job... It’s not the decision, it’s the explanation. Just be honest with the explanation.”
