Dan Beyer: “I applaud the 49ers for sticking with their plan. They went through last season with Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo getting dinged up, then making it to the NFC championship game with Garoppolo as their starting quarterback. I love the plan and I understand John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan’s jobs are secure, but to sit there and say competition doesn’t matter…I have a problem with that!"
Aaron Torres: “It does run counter to everything that sports are supposed to be about which is, putting yourself in position to win at the highest level. I think you can say a lot about Trey Lance, we understand the upside. But I don’t think there’s anyone on the planet that would argue today that Lance gives them a better chance to win at the highest level than Jimmy Garoppolo.”

Dan Beyer and Aaron Torres react to the 49ers naming QB Trey Lance as the starter for the 2022 NFL season. Dan and Aaron understand why San Francisco has stuck with their eventual plan to start Lance, but throwing competition with Jimmy Garoppolo out of the window takes away from the essence of competition in determining which quarterback puts the organization in the position to win at the highest level.
