Colin Cowherd: Justin Fields is a Backup Quarterback

Colin Cowherd: “Multiple NFL sources are saying Justin Fields is a backup. It doesn’t look like there’s a starting job out there at the moment. If you’re still saying Chicago should stick with Justin Fields, you didn’t watch the games and you’re not living in reality. I’ve heard so many bad and strange Justin Fields takes in the last six months, but there’s only opinion you can have... He’s a very good athlete who is bad in the pocket. That’s it. This is a non-fiction show. If you want to do podcasts and go down YouTube rabbit holes, there’s a lot of conspiracies out there – we don’t do ‘em.
So far in his career from the pocket Justin Fields is basically Davis Mills, Taylor Heinicke, and Mac Jones, and you don’t like any of those guys. When you hear he’s a backup quarterback, the market is speaking. The NFL GM’s are looking at film and the film is telling you that he’s got some wiggle, he’s got some Zach Wilson arm strength, but in the end he’s not very good from the pocket.
The Raiders needed a quarterback and they took Gardner Minshew. If you have a declining asset – anything, an old used car – sell it quickly. If you have an ascending asset, hold it and be patient. Obviously, Justin Fields is now a declining asset but is it too late to move him? There’s an argument to be made that you hold onto him until the Draft and if there’s a team who wants a quarterback and doesn’t get one then you may have leverage again. Then do you wait to camp when someone gets hurts?
Find me the quarterbacks who after three years aren’t very good in the pocket and then they pop. The Giants thought that with Daniel Jones and now they regret giving him the contract. The Buccaneers kept thinking Jameis Winston was gonna turn, after five years they’re like ‘let’s go get Brady.’ Jacksonville convinced themselves ‘BLAKE BORTLES JUST TOOK A LONG TIME TO BAKE!’... They paid him, he never got good, and now he’s out of the league. There’s not a lot of history of guys getting 35-40 stars and with decent enough weapons not being very good from the pocket. He’s viewed by the league as a guy you have to change your entire coaching staff to make it work, which people were willing to do for Lamar Jackson because Lamar Jackson got great really fast. That’s different.”

Watch Colin Cowherd discuss Justin Fields’ precarious starting quarterback predicament with the Chicago Bears, as Fields’ future with the team and his future as a starter altogether could be in serious jeopardy.

Check out the segment above as Colin thinks Fields is a backup quarterback at this point and more rivaling the caliber of QBs the likes of Mac Jones, Davis Mills, and Taylor Heinicke than actually warranting a comparison with likely Bears no. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams.
