Simone Biles, the most decorated American gymnast in history, fell short of medaling in the women's balance beam final, her second-to-last event at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Monday (August 5).

Biles, 27, slipped and fell off the apparatus at the end of her routine, resulting in a score of 13.100, which tied teammate Suni Lee as the United States was left off the podium in the event for the first time since the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Alice D'Amato of Italy won gold with a score of 14.366, Zhou Yaqin of China took silver with a score of 14.100 and Manila Esposito of Italy took bronze with a score of 14.000.

Biles won gold in all three of her previous events, the women's team final, the women's individual vault final and the women's individual all-around final, becoming first American to ever the event win twice, having previously won the all-around during her Olympic debut at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games. The 27-year-old is still scheduled to compete in the floor exercise on Monday, having already won 10 medals across three Olympics games, the most ever by an American gymnast.
