A lone extra time goal by Sophia Smith propelled the United States Women's Soccer Team to a 1-0 win against Germany at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Tuesday (August 6), clinching a berth in the gold medal game.
Smith scored in the 95th minute on an assist from Mallory Swanson in the semifinal round victory. Goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher kept Germany scoreless through 121 minutes of total play, making seven saves, which included a crucial deflection off her left foot in the 117th minute.
The American women will face the winner of the other semifinal matchup between Brazil and Spain set for Tuesday afternoon in their first Olympic gold medal match since the 2012 London Games.
The USWNT had a 10-7 advantage in shots on goal and 19-15 edge in shot attempts, while the Germans were called for 18 fouls and given two red cards. The Americans have gone undefeated in Olympic play, which included wins against Japan (1-0), Australia (2-1) and Zambia (3-0). Smith previously scored the United States' first goals in its 4-1 Group B win against Germany on July 28.
