Jason McIntyre Says Steelers Should Trade T.J. Watt to Save Their Franchise

Watch Jason McIntyre, guest-hosting on The Herd for Colin Cowherd, explain why the Pittsburgh Steelers could save their middling franchise by trading defensive stalwart J.J. Watt, as McIntyre says the offensively inept Steelers have zero future in a modern NFL landscape that overwhelmingly favors the offensive side of the ball.

Check out the segment above as McIntyre says the ‘mid-off’ at quarterback between Russell Wilson and Justin Fields is an embarrassment to the once-proud franchise, and a blockbuster trade involving Watt in exchange for highly touted draft picks could pave the way towards Pittsburgh drafting their quarterback of the future.

Jason McIntyre: “I know the kids like to use the word ‘mid’ and this is a ‘mid-off’ at quarterback, folks. It is uninspiring and it is not going well in Pittsburgh.
I wanted to tell Steelers fans about this small company you might have heard of called Intel. They were designing and manufacturing computer chips for personal computers going back to the 70’s and they were utterly dominant. And then smartphones came along and Intel said ‘I don’t know about those smartphones, let’s stick with personal computers!’... And you know how that worked out. They missed the window on pivoting to smartphones and that was a huge screw-up on the part of Intel.
How does this relate to the Pittsburgh Steelers? For close to three decades they have dominated thanks to defense, but the Pittsburgh Steelers, like Intel, missed the pivot towards being an offensive league. They were the oldest defense in the NFL last season, and is the most expensive defense in the NFL this season. Mike, what are we doing?
If you want to turn things around in Pittsburgh, and there is no end in sight the way this team is built, you gotta put TJ Watt on the trading block. It’s not a defensive league. Every playoff game they’ve been to and gotten smashed in the last six years they’re giving up 30-40 points. What’s the point of being built around defense? TJ Watt is going to get you two ones [first-round picks]. I know TJ Watt is beloved and a historically great player but you trade him for two ones. To a team like Atlanta who seems to be spending all their money on defense. ‘HEY, MATTHEW JUDON, JUSTIN SIMMONS – COME ON DOWN! WE’RE ALL IN!’... Who else is all in? Lions, Jets, Eagles... Lot of teams out there desperate, lot of teams appear close. The Lions are close to a Super Bowl, are they a piece away?
Watt is going to be expensive, he’s at least two number ones but Pittsburgh needs that desperately. They need the ammunition to go up and draft a quarterback. Pittsburgh ain’t drafting in the top 10 a lot because they like to hold onto the whole ‘HEY, WE’RE NEVER UNDER .500!’... A lot of that has you drafting in the middle. You’re not getting an elite quarterback that way. They got Ben Roethlisberger at 11.”
