Chris Broussard Says Matthew Stafford is Not a Surefire Hall of Famer

Watch Chris Broussard of Fox Sports Radio’s The Odd Couple discuss Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford’s Hall of Fame candidacy, as Broussard doesn’t think Stafford’s chances of making it to Canton are as high as everyone assumes they are.

Check out the segment above as Broussard details why an underwhelming resume of two Pro Bowls and hordes of empty stats from an inflated era of passing numbers doesn't really impress Broussard much.

Chris Broussard: “Caleb Williams said the two best quarterbacks in the league were Aaron Rodgers and Matthew Stafford... What do you think of his Hall of Fame bid? I don’t think he’s surefire. I’m not saying he’s not a Hall of Famer, I just think it’s questionable. It’s beyond questionable. He’s a two-time Pro Bowler in how many years has he played? You know how many dudes make the Pro Bowl? Last year Gardner Minshew was in the Pro Bowl. Mitch Trubisky has made the Pro Bowl. Who was the backup for the Ravens [Tyler Huntley] who was a Pro Bowler? And Stafford has only made two in 15 years?? Had Jaquiski Tartt held onto that rock [in the 2022 NFC title game vs. SF], then Stafford wouldn’t even have that Super Bowl.
I know Detroit has been a bad organization till recently, but those teams had some players. Calvin Johnson, Ndamukong Suh... Stafford could not get them over the hump. I get that he throws a pretty ball, and the stats... Had he been linked up with Sean McVay early in his career with the Rams he’s probably a no doubt Hall of Famer. But just with two Pro Bowls are going to be tough. Those are basically his only two accolades. He was a Comeback Player of the Year, and obviously he’s won the Super Bowl, but the accolades are missing.”
Veejay Huskey: “The accolades may be missing, but the totality of his numbers are not. He is 11th all-time in touchdowns...”
Broussard: “But we’re in an era where the top 10 quarterbacks statistically are all gonna be from the modern era because they throw the football more and the rules are different... Look at Tom Brady. There’s no way in his mid-40's that he was as good as he was in his 30’s when he was in that second run of winning Super Bowls, but statistically his best years came in his 40’s. It’s easier now to rack up big numbers. I’m not trying to say Stafford is not nice, but when you say Stafford might be a ‘first-ballot Hall of Famer’ and absolutely a ‘second-ballot’, I think you gotta hold the phones on that because the accolades just aren’t there. Yeah, the gaudy numbers are there, but not much winning and not many accolades.”
