Rob Gronkowski Asked About Retirement: 'I Don’t See Why I Won’t Be Back'

Rob Gronkowski came out of retirement to re-join Tom Brady on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this past offseason.

On Sunday, the 31-year-old tight end won his fourth Super Bowl, his first with the Buccaneers, and doesn't seem to be done playing football just yet.

"Yeah, I'll remain unretired," Gronkowski told reporters after the Buccaneers' 31-9 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LV via ProFootballTalk. “I’m a free agent. It’s the first time in my career that I’m a free agent. I signed basically like an eight-year contract and basically played it all out — signed that when I was 22 years old. And it’s just pretty incredible to play out a contract like that — with a retirement in between. That’s surreal. But I definitely see myself coming back, just the guys around here, the players around here, the coaches, the people in the front office, they’re all just great people. I loved working with them all year long.
“So, obviously going to soak this in and see where I’m at in a couple weeks, but I don’t see why not. I don’t see why I won’t be back.”

Gronkowski led the Buccaneers with six receptions for 67 yards and two touchdowns, the first of which set a new NFL record for most postseason touchdowns by a duo, as the 13th between himself and Brady during their lengthy run as teammates.

Brady and Gronkowski, who had previously appeared in five Super Bowls together prior to Sunday's game, connected on an 8-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter, which surpassed former San Francisco 49ers Joe Montana and Jerry Rice's previous record of 12.

Brady later connected with Gronkowski on a 17-yard touchdown with 6:05 remaining in the second quarter to extend the Bucs' lead to 14-3 and set the new record at 14 touchdowns.

The duo has now won four Super Bowls together, while Brady -- who won his record-setting fifth Super Bowl MVP on Sunday -- has won seven all-time, the most by an NFL quarterback.

Brady and Gronkowski had previously spent their entire careers as members of the New England Patriots, prior to reuniting with the Bucs this past offseason.

Gronkowski initially announced his retirement a month after his last Super Bowl victory in 2019, before announcing his return to football and having his rights traded by the Patriots to the Buccaneers in April 2020.
