Could This Pro Bowl Player Be a Dark Horse Starting QB Option for the Jets?

Jason McIntyre: “If Stafford is available, we know [Kyle] Shanahan and his system loved Matthew Stafford [in 2021 when SF wanted to trade for him], well, you got the Shanahan system with [Mike] LaFleur in the Jets. Do the Jets say ‘hey, you want picks? Give us Matt Stafford.’ Matt Stafford to the Jets for a slew of draft picks, and all of the sudden the Jets have a quarterback and a top-flight defense in a division with Josh Allen, Bill Belichick, and Tua. They need a quarterback and gotta make a move on somebody. Big arm, can cut through that bad New York weather, Detroit played in the NFC North. The Jets have the draft capital and they’re really well-built except for quarterback.” (Segment Below)

With Monday’s breaking news of Derek Carr spurning the Jets to sign with the New Orleans Saints, Jason McIntyre doubled-down on his take from January that saw him proclaim Matthew Stafford as a potential option at quarterback for the Jets via a blockbuster trade with the Rams.

Stafford is 35 years old and dealt with serious back and shoulder issues in 2022, but the Jets might have to get desperate in the event they fail to bring in Aaron Rodgers or Jimmy Garoppolo, with Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota as lukewarm backup plans at QB.

The Jets’ seven wins in 2022 was a solid improvement on their four-win campaign the previous year, and at one point last season the team was 7-4 and appearing like an imposing playoff contender before bombing badly at the end of the year with deadbeat quarterbacks Zach Wilson, Joe Flacco, and Mike White bungling the impotent offense.

The team returns Offensive Rookie of the Year Garrett Wilson at wide receiver, and Defensive Rookie of the Year Sauce Gardner at corner, as well as the return of fellow-rookie sensation Breece Hall, who was one of the top rushers in the NFL before tearing his ACL in Week 7.
