A 25-year-old woman and a 5-year-old boy died in a possible drowning in the backyard pool of former baseball player Carl Crawford on Saturday (May 16).
According to multiple reports, the incident occurred just before 3 p.m. at a Houston home that belongs to the ex-Major League Baseball star.
In a press release, obtained by People, the Houston Police Department said the boy began struggling in the water, and the woman made an attempt to save him. Both victims were unconscious when police arrived, and they were pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital.
While circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear,TMZ reported that Carl was hosting a small gathering of 6 people at his north Houston home when the incident occurred.
Police did not name the victims, though family members, who spoke to The Houston Chronicle, identified them as Bethany Lartigue and Kasen Hersi.
According to the publication, Bethany, who played for the professional women’s football team Arlington Impact, was not related to Kasen nor did she have a "personal connection" to Carl.
Bethany's brother,Brandon Lartigue, told the Chronicle, perPeople, she was a strong swimmer who also worked as a delivery driver and had dreams of becoming a police officer.
“It has not processed yet. We’re dealing with a lot of things right now because it’s unexpected – the death of someone who had a lot of promise in life,” he shared.
Carl has yet to publicly comment on the incident.
