Dan Patrick: “When did you start to understand that Paul Pierce really started to hate LeBron James and that there was a real issue between those two?”
Brian Scalabrine: “When I got there we weren’t good the first two years, and I think as soon as Kevin Garnett got there it became an ‘us against the world’ mentality where you’re either with us or we hate you. You don’t get this a lot in today’s NBA. That’s when this whole thing started. I feel like Pierce having Garnett behind him made it a much different fight going against LeBron. Before that we just weren’t very good, and it was hard to have that rivalry with LeBron when you’re not matching up in the playoffs.”
Dan: “But Paul STILL has a problem with LeBron!”
Scalabrine: “That’s old school generation, you know how that is. Michael Jordan still has a problem with Isiah Thomas. That’s just the way it was back then. Nobody is hugging it out, and people found reasons to hate other people back in the day... It was a little bit of the 'Ray' thing too.”
Listen to former NBA player Brian Scalabrine, who won a championship with the Boston Celtics in 2008, detail to Dan Patrick why he thinks Paul Pierce may still hold a ‘beef’ with his former Eastern Conference rival LeBron James, as Pierce’s Celtics and LeBron’s Cavs and Heat had some of the most memorable playoff battles of the era during the mid-to-late 00’s, and early 2010’s.
Pierce has even been on record the past few seasons saying that he doesn’t even think LeBron is a top 5 player of all time.
