With less than one week until the Summer Olympics kick-off in Tokyo, Japan, officials confirmed that a person at the Olympic Village tested positive for COVID-19.
Olympic officials declined to provide details about the individual, only saying they were not an athlete and were not a resident of Japan. They have been put into a 14-day quarantine.
"I understand that there are still many worrying factors," Tokyo 2020 President Seiko Hashimoto said. "Organizers must try to make sure that people will understand that these games are safe and secure."
"We are sparing no efforts," she added.
Authorities are expecting around 11,000 people to reside in the Olympic Village during the Games, which run from July 23-August 8.
Officials said that in total, 45 people under the "jurisdiction" of the Olympic Organizing Committee have tested positive for COVID-19, but the most recent case is the first one associated with the Olympic Village. While most of the positive tests involved contractors, one athlete and three members of the media tested positive.
"In the current situation, that positive cases arise is something we must assume is possible," said Toshiro Muto, the CEO of the Tokyo organizing committee.
