Emmanuel Acho Calls Out Sha'Carri Richardson After She Rips the Media

Sha'Carri Richardson after failing to qualify for the world championship: “I’m coming to speak, not on just on my behalf, but on all athletes’ behalf, that when you guys do interviews, y’all should respect athletes more. Y’all should understand them, coming from whether they’re winning, whether they’re losing, whatever the case may be, athletes deserve way more respect than when y’all just come and throw cameras into their faces. Understand how an athlete operates and then ask your questions. Then be more understanding of the fact that they are still human, no matter just to the fact that y’all are just trying to get something to put out in an article to make a dollar. Thank you.”

Emmanuel Acho: “I don’t necessarily have a problem with the message but I do take issue with the messenger. We’ve heard the message from so many people, we’ve heard the message from Naomi Osaka, heard the message from Cam Newton, we’ve heard the message time and time again from several different athletes... my issue with the messenger goes back to the simple saying of ‘you can’t call for attention then hang up.’ I vividly recall being at a track meet in 2021 when Sha’Carri runs a 10.75, a fantastic time for a woman and a top 10 time in the history of the sport, then runs directly to the camera, ‘COME GET ME!’ she said. So after your successful runs you are going to run to the camera, then you cannot be mad when after you’re unsuccessful runs the camera runs to you… There is an ‘economy’ of sport where athletes must speak positively or negatively after a performance because the fan wants to engage in YOU. Sha’Carri has done more for fan engagement in track and field than any track and field athlete since Usain Bolt, but the reason she has done so much for fan engagement is because she engages with the fans. You can’t only engage when it’s positive, no athlete has that luxury. Sha’Carri, if you are going to be a star you are not immune from going through what stars have to go through.”

Listen to Emmanuel Acho and Marcellus Wiley react to United States women's sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson calling out the media this past week after she failed to qualify for the world championship at the 2022 USA Track and Field Outdoor Championship.

Listen to Acho and Wiley explain why Richardson can’t just use the media for her own personal gain after races in which she wins, and then want to go and hide away without having to answer any questions after races in which she loses.
