Watch Colin Cowherd of FS1's The Herd downplay the league-leading turnover rate for Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark, as Clark’s 5.5 turnovers per game lead the WNBA despite the rookie being just one of two players in the entire league averaging at least 15 points (16.7), 5 rebounds (5.9), and 5 assists (7.6).
Check out the segment below as Colin compares Clark to former NFL All-Pro quarterback Andrew Luck, who was one of the most valuable players in the NFL despite Luck often ranking near the top of the league in interceptions thrown, as Colin reminds WNBA fans that the most star-studded players in the NBA (Luka Doncic, Joel Embiid, LeBron James, Nikola Jokic) all ranked in the top of the league in turnovers this season.
Colin Cowherd: “I think we’re staring at the wrong thing with Caitlin Clark. Caitlin Clark’s production is incredible. She has now done four straight double-double games -- points and assists. 15 points-12 assists, 13 points-11 assists, 19 points-13 assists, 29 points-13 assists... Incredible. She reminds me of Andrew Luck. Same city, doesn’t have a lot of support. Luck comes in with terrible o-lines, has to win by shootout, at the time breaks the rookie passing record, 4,400 yards, 28 total touchdowns, goes 11-5, and all anyone wants to talk about it is ‘WELL, HE THREW A LOT OF INTERCEPTIONS!’... You’re looking at the wrong stuff with Andrew Luck. 4,400 yards and 28 touchdowns with a terrible o-line – at the time, all rookie records. ‘BUT HE HAD 18 PICKS!’... Yeah, he’s not a veteran quarterback. Dude was a production machine with virtually no Pro Bowlers, and that’s Caitlin Clark’s turnover talk.
All I’ve heard: ‘OH, THE TURNOVERS WITH CAITLIN CLARK!’... A) she’s got the ball in her hands a lot. B) she is a rookie and the game is faster. You know who also has a lot of turnovers? Players who play fast and loose. LeBron leads the NBA all-time in turnovers. Steph and Luka have a lot of turnovers. I’ve never banged on quarterbacks who throw picks if they’re productive. Peyton Manning, Dan Marino, John Elway, Brett Favre, go back to Joe Namath... They threw a lot of picks. Tom Brady had pick-sixes in the Super Bowl and WON. Pick-sixes happen if you’re a quarterback that plays with courage. Let it rip, baby, play fast and loose. You gotta have a short memory in the NFL and you gotta have a short memory in basketball if you play fast. Steph Curry can have back-to-back awful turnovers, but he’s going faster the next time down the floor, and that’s what makes him Steph Curry. If you look at Caitlin Clark the last ten games, she’s not only good but she’s getting better.
I’m OK with Caitlin Clark’s turnovers. She's good, she’s productive, double-doubles... She is second in the WNBA in assists per game. It’s not like she’s got a lot of finishers on that team. She’s second in the league in assists without a lot of finishers, and she’s third in total three’s made when everybody knows ‘GUARD CAITLIN CLARK IF YOU’RE PLAYING INDIANA’... It’s not like she has All-Star teammates who are taking off some of that.
Turn the telescope. You’re staring at the wrong stuff. The turnovers don’t bother me. Those will come down over time and she will catch up to the speed of the game."
