Doug Gottlieb: Dolphins Can't Reach a Super Bowl With Tua Tagovailoa

Doug Gottlieb: “The Dolphins lose and the Eagles win, so who is it more about? I gotta be the guy and say it’s more about Tua and the throws he can’t make. As much as the Dolphins weren't great and Tua wasn’t great, you’re down a touchdown late and driving, and you flail one up into the end zone which was short, had too much air on it and just died, and gets intercepted and that’s the game. When people say Tua is a ‘system quarterback’ what they’re trying to say is if you just make him into a quarterback where he’s got to read it, find a way, and thread the needle down the field... like that last pass is a perfect example of why he just doesn’t have the arm talent to do it. I don’t see [Tua] at the top end. I don’t think the Dolphins are good enough for how Tua plays. At some point he has to make some of these plays that I just don’t feel like he’s shown he can make. I don’t want to have a massive overreaction about the Dolphins but let’s be honest—they haven't beaten any good teams. They scored 70 against the Broncos, who’s coaching staff was probably sending a message ‘we’re just not prepared or not any good.’ It wasn’t like it was ‘70’ the whole game, it spun out of control at the end of the game. They’re good, they’re fun, they’re fast, but... that’s not a Super Bowl team. It doesn't mean they can’t become one, but it does feel like Tua's a bit of a limiting factor. He’s been really good at times this year, and he’s really good for what they do, but if you can get them off track of what they like to do, and make him just stand back there and have to progression read or throw balls deep, or deep outside the numbers... like, it doesn’t get there. The Dolphins can post as many videos of him throwing long passes in the preseason as they want to but in the real games those balls died deep. They’re 5-0 against teams that are a combined 8-25, 0-2 against the Bills and Eagles.” (Full Segment Above)

Watch Doug Gottlieb explain why he doesn’t see Tua Tagovailoa as this NFL MVP catalyst that can vault the Dolphins into the Super Bowl conversation, as Gottlieb details why Miami’s loss in Philadelphia over the weekend was foreshadowing Tagovailoa’s eventual unmasking later in the year when his shortcomings are exposed again in a big game.

Check out the segment above as Gottlieb discusses his reasoning for not buying into Tagovailoa as an imposing arm talent.
