Colin Cowherd: Matthew Stafford is Holding the Detroit Lions Franchise Back

Colin Cowherd: “The Lions have the number 3 pick and the most GAME-CHANGING player available is Tua. These other pass rushers and corners are not taking 70 snaps a game. Detroit is saying ‘Well, Matt Stafford is talented’… But he’s not a WINNER, and definitely not a winner against really good competition. In His 11 years he’s 8-55 against playoff teams. If it was just about ‘winning’ then the Chiefs and Ravens never move off Alex Smith and Joe Flacco. But they could no longer beat the really good teams in January. Just because Stafford is the best ‘YOU’ have ever had, doesn’t mean he’s the best you ‘CAN’ have. You don’t have to trade Stafford, the Chiefs kept Alex Smith for a year after they drafted Patrick Mahomes, then moved off of him. They should draft Tua, mentor Tua, develop Tua, and watch Tua. You don’t pass on a Lamar Jackson or Patrick Mahomes. Are you really going to stay with ‘can’t win a division’ Stafford?? You’ve got to have higher standards in this sport, and drafting a corner isn’t changing ANYTHING in that division.” (Full Audio at Bottom of Page)

Listen to Colin Cowherd explain why he thinks the Detroit Lions should draft Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa with the number three overall pick in the upcoming 2020 NFL Draft and trigger their exit plan with incumbent starter Matthew Stafford.

Cowherd says the Lions, one of the most incompetent franchises in sports history, need to get some higher standard when it comes to their quarterback and get off the bandwagon of a guy who hasn’t won a division title or playoff game in 11 career seasons, and a guy who is 8-55 against playoff teams.

Check out the audio below as Colin details why he believes the Lions should do exactly what the Chiefs did with Patrick Mahomes in 2017, when they let Mahomes sit behind respected Pro Bowl caliber quarterback Alex Smith for a year before handing him the keys to the franchise.
