Deadspin Writer Says Black National Anthem is NFL's 'Dumbest Decision Ever'

Carron J. Phillips: “When we think about the history of the NFL, we’ve never seen a sports league do as many dumb things as they have. This one took the cake for me just for the simple fact of‘WHY?’ Like what is the purpose of this and what does this serve? The NFL, just like most of these corporations around the country are giving black people everything we didn’t want or didn’t ask for, and are giving us these weak substitutes that don’t help us and don’t give us any solutions to the problems that we have or have dealt with the last 401 years. What does playing this song do for us? How about hiring some more black coaches? How about hiring some more black GMs? How about having a black majority owner or president for the first time in league history? How about giving the dude with the number 7 a job since we got all these other bums in the league throwing passes? Let’s address THOSE issues. Playing the ‘Black National Anthem’ that the majority of black people don’t know all these stanzas to? What is this going to do for us? NOTHING.” (Full Video Above)

Listen to Deadspin writer Carron J. Phillips join The Odd Couple with Chris Broussard and Rob Parker to explain why he thinks the NFL’s considering playing the ‘Black National Anthem’ before Week 1 games is their ‘dumbest decision yet.’

Check out the interview above as Phillips details why he thinks Whitney Houston’s ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing’ song literally does nothing for a black community who simply wants more black coaches, more black GMs, the first majority black owner, and possibly even Colin Kaepernick back in the league, and not some song that many black people don’t even know the lyrics to.
