Lavar Arrington: Brian Flores' is Coming Off as 'Narcissistic' Amid Lawsuit

Brian Flores' legal team releases statement on the Texans' hiring of Lovie Smith:

“Mr. Flores is happy to hear that the Texans have hired a Black head coach, Lovie Smith, as Mr. Flores’ goal in bringing his case is to provide real opportunities for Black and minority candidates to be considered for coaching and executive positions within the NFL... However, we would be remiss not to mention that Mr. Flores was one of three finalists for the Texans’ head coach position and, after a great interview and mutual interest, it is obvious that the only reason Mr. Flores was not selected was his decision to stand up against racial inequality across the NFL.”

Lavar Arrington: “Lovie Smith is as recognizable a figure as Tony Dungy. Like, the two dopest Black coaches are playing against each other for the first time in the SUPER BOWL and you’re taking aim at Lovie?? If I’m Lovie Smith and they bring that quote to me…you just diminished and downgraded me for the simple fact that it built and boosted YOU up for what it is that’s going on. But that’s a total contradiction to what it is you’re saying you’re representing. So now I guess any Black coach that gets hired for a head coaching job is because of Brian Flores, and they wouldn’t have gotten the job if Brian Flores hadn’t did the lawsuit? Because that's basically in essence what you’re saying… I have talked to a lot of players over the last day since this whole thing started because I wanted to get perspective, and I wanted to understand why there was so much backlash towards what I was saying [about Brian Flores]… I’ve been asking a couple different players that are current players, and the response has been pretty much the same from every single one of them “I DON’T GIVE AN ‘F’ ABOUT WHAT FLORES IS DOING", and I was like ‘dang, like that’s kind of harsh.’ I have a job to do, I’m gonna do my job, and here’s the one thing I hadn’t thought about…there are very few times that coaches and players have a relationship that goes beyond the field. I can think of literally two or three coaches in my entire career of playing that I ‘played FOR’… The rest of them can kiss my a**. Most of these dudes will sell you out. This is all about self-preservation. But now you want to be preserved and you want to be supported, and in these types of moments it’s like ‘ohhhhh, so NOW you’re experiencing what players feel, you’re feeling what we feel when we gotta deal with what YOU’RE doing directly, not what the ownership is dealing with, now you’re dealing with what YOU do. Ask Tua how Flores made him feel? Ask Kenny Stills how he feels when Flores started playing Jay-Z and messing with him. Stills was representing what Kaepernick was supporting and standing up for the fact that Jay-Z said it was ‘time to move on’ from these types of conversations, and be more progressive, and Kenny Stills is like ‘NO, it shouldn’t be that way’, and Flores bangs Jay-Z loud in practice to antagozine him the entire week. Yet now you’ll look for Kenny Stills, or Kaepernick, or somebody to come to you. Could you imagine if Colin Kaepernick came out and said ‘THIS IS WRONG, BRIAN FLORES IS CORRECT…’, this thing would be in orbit. How many activists have we heard jump out and talk on Brian Flores’ behalf? I haven’t heard any. All this [Flores' legal statement] does is further expose ego and a narcissistic approach to what’s going on, because you would even sell out your own to try and prove a point for yourself. That’s the bottom line conclusion of a statement like that. If I was Brian Flores I would be like ‘HELL NO, YOU AIN’T RELEASING THAT, THAT’S LOVIE SMITH, ONE OF THE MOST RESPECTED FIGURES!’ Forget the qualifier of saying he’s one of the most respected ‘Black…’, he’s one of the most respected figures in our game, and we’re going to put this statement out??” (Full Audio Segment Above)

Listen to former Pro Bowl linebacker Lavar Arrington discuss the continuing fallout of the Brian Flores vs. the NFL saga, and explain why he thinks Flores’ legal representation completely botched the statement they released on the Texans’ hiring of Lovie Smith, which appeared to backhandedly demean the longtime head coach.

Check out the segment above as Arrington explains why the statement came off as 'narcissistic', and why he thinks support for Flores around the league is actually a lot lower than you would imagine.
