Former Major League Baseball infielder, coach and hitting instructor Mike Brumley has died at the age of 61 following a reported car crash in Mississippi Saturday (June 15) night.

Brumley played for six MLB teams in eight seasons, including the Seattle Mariners and Chicago Cubs, both of whom he later worked for as a coach.

"We are saddened by the passing of former Mariners player and coach, Mike Brumley. Our hearts go out to his family, friends and loved ones. Mike’s impact on the field, in our organization and across baseball, was felt by generations of players," the Mariners wrote on their X account Sunday (June 16) afternoon.

Brumley most recently served as a hitting instructor for the Atlanta Braves from 2018 to 2022, which included working closely with third baseman Austin Riley, who was awoken from his sleep Sunday morning to learn about his mentor's death.

"I got a text about 2:30 this morning and I have been up since," Riley said via ESPN after Sunday's loss to the Tampa Bay Rays in which he pointed up at the sky after hitting a home run in the seventh inning. "There are very few people that have been role models in my baseball career, my dad being No. 1 and Mike Brumley being No. 2.

"I feel for his family and his kids and everybody that he was close to. This is a tragic day. Prayers out to his family. It's a tough pill to swallow."
